In 1266-1269, Jacob van Maerlant wrote in Der Naturen Bloeme that the fruit of the juniper bush was an effective remedy for stomach cramps when boiled in wine. Professor Eric Van Schoonenberghe identifies this digestive drink as the forerunner of what we now know as ‘jenever’ or Dutch gin. The history of jenever since the Middle Ages is by turns exciting and splendid, but includes one or two less illustrious chapters too. Medieval alchemy, the spread of the distiller’s art, brandy’s conquest of the world, the alembic and distillation column, the first industrial distilleries, the influence of taxation, repressive legislation and publicity – all these topics are dealt with at length in this marvellous book.
